Is this a group health plan replacement?
It can be. Many startups use ICHRA instead of a traditional group plan because it’s budget-controlled and remote-friendly. It allows businesses of all sizes to reimburse employees for health insurance on a tax-free basis while staying 100% compliant with federal regulations.
Can founders use this for themselves?
C-Corp owners with W2's are eligible. Other business types do not currently qualify for their owners to claim HRA benefits.
What if we only have 1–2 employees today?
That’s common. This is designed to scale as you hire without renegotiating a group plan every year. Your first W-2 employee's subscription is free for the first 12 months. YC founder accounts are free for life.
Do employees have to buy insurance?
Employees must have qualifying individual health coverage (such as a plan from the ACA marketplace or a private insurer) to receive reimbursements. If they don’t enroll in a plan, they won’t be eligible for ICHRA funds. However, your business only reimburses actual expenses, so you never pay for unused benefits.
Do you support multi-state teams?
Yes — that’s one of the main reasons startups use ICHRA. You can offer different HRA amounts to employees in different states.
How fast can we launch?
If you already know your allowance amounts and start date, you can get set up quickly and invite employees right away. The average onboarding time for employers with 5-20 employees to begin taking advantage of their HRAs is 14 days.
